Highlights of the NEW CUNY Application
Effective as of June 1, 2018
- No more rank order.
The old way was to rank-order 1, 2, 3, 4 your choices to a CUNY school.
#1 John Jay, #2 Hunter, #3 Brooklyn College, #4 City College. Then it would be a matter if your first choice accepted you. If not, then it would be your 2nd. A student would only be accepted to 1 CUNY school.
Now, you can apply up to 4 schools and get a decision from each and every single one.
No need to rank order.
This is indeed good news for the GCC student considering their transfer options.
2. Supplemental Materials
There are also supplemental materials that a student can opt to submit.
Translation: it is not mandatory. UNLESS, the college/program you apply to requests it.
However, it can be a boost to your application. An option is listing your extracurricular activities. One option is the essay question prompts. Another are the recommendations.
Students, keep in mind when asking for recommendations, ask the person first before sending a CUNY recommendation request to them. Wait for the person’s response to your request. www.cuny.edu/requiredrecommendations
Students make a decision as to whether or not they want to examine the letter of recommendation.
I would encourage students to view the letters whenever possible. It helps to affirm your strengths.
At the same time, it gives you the opportunity to understand how you come across to the recommender.
3. Choosing a College/Major, Program Requirements
For choosing a college and major, you can leave it blank and click on the Search button to generate a list of majors.
Some may have program requirements:
School of Labor & Urban Studies-Urban and Community Studies-Urban Studies
After you have selected your colleges and majors, it will inform you of any additional program requirements.
4. Extracurricular Activities can also be included. Activity Types, which include employment.
The student has the ability to add additional extracurricular activities.
5. Application Fee
CUNY students choose the Pay later option.
The transfer application fee of $70/CUNY school is waived for current students.
Note: When a student graduates from a CUNY school and is not a current student, the transfer application is NOT WAIVED.
6. Profile of Transfer Students
A great resource is the following link where you can see the profile of students who are accepted as transfers to each of the CUNY schools:
